This is my final post for the Schnitzel and Boo Mini Quilt Swap. I’m mailing off this mini in just a few days, and hopefully its new owner loves it as much as I do. When I first started this mini, I realized I didn’t have a single piece of Anna Maria Horner (which is my partner’s favorite) and so I had to post on Instagram and see if anyone had any they would like to swap or share. I was overwhelmed by the response I received. I got a ton of scraps and charms. More than enough for what I had planned to do with them.
I actually planned to do a hexie mini quilt like this one from Modern Handcraft. However, my hands don’t do English Paper Piecing (EPP) very well. I was miserable after 8 tiny hexies so I gave up. Then I remembered that I had the Glam Clam pattern downloaded from a previous quilt and decided that the 4″ clam template was perfect.
I immediately started cutting into all the fabrics and pieced this in just a few hours. The next night, I basted it and then started quilting. The quilting alone took close to three hours. I had to frequently change out bobbins, wind bobbins, rethread the machine, etc. I mean, I did use 13 colors of thread! I love the effect it gives though, so I don’t regret this decision one bit. I went with “matchstick quilting” in the end, which is basically straight line quilting 1/8″ apart. My lines are slightly more organic in nature, rather than straight.
On the backside, you can really see the thread changes and the overall effect. I used Quilter’s Linen in Grey for the back since I really wanted the thread to pop on this side. For the binding, I used a print from WordPlay by Michelle D’Amore.
Quilt Stats:
Final Size | 14″ x 15.5″
Fabrics Used | Various Anna Maria Horner scraps, Quilters Linen in Grey for the back.
Thread | Aurifil 50 wt. in 13 different colors.
Batting | Warm and Natural 100% Cotton
